The City Council announced a tender to design a support building for the outdoor market that is weekly installed in the dock of Bergen, in one of the most singular and touristic areas of the city, in front of “Bryggen” neighbourhood (bryggen means dock, pier in norwegian).
Our proposal tried to demarcate this open space, the scattered area occupied by the market stalls, not in a restrictive way but underlining the spontaneous dynamic that this activity had gradually consolidated. Placing the building aligned to Strandgt street protects the area against traffic noise and allows the creation of a public square, open towards the sea, a square equipped with the necessary facilities for the outdoor market activity. The support building functions as a big logia, with views over Bryggen neighbourhood, even from the buildings behind it. The upper floors has restoration areas related to market products, the lower floor, the requested fixed stalls.
The placement of the building avoids shadows over the square and allows the contact with the dock. The square is equipped with a technical floor for the market and its stair-shaped edge is as a big stand that brings the water surface closer to citizens.
