Its construction started in May 1884, in the same place of its predecessor, the Gran Teatro de Cádiz, disappeared after the fire occurred on the morning of August 6, 1881. Adolfo Morales de los Rios and D. Juan Cabrera Latorre were its authors. The theatre was finished in January of 1910.
The Teatro Falla is an exempt building erected on a wide-open plot in the dense village of Cadiz, the Plaza Manuel de Falla. Its plan responds to the type that was developed and spread throughout the country during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
During the refurbishment works we had to deal with many issues of technical, functional or conceptual order, at times in isolation and usually interlaced.
Among the technical issues, it were necessary: the consolidation of the structure (with the replacement of all the floors), the restoration of the interior partitionings, the restoration of the Neo-Arabic masonry of its facades, the repairment of the roofs, the provision of adequate facilities and the updating of their stage equipment while putting into operation the old stage machinery. Regarding functional questions, there were not greater difficulties than the improvement of the visibility from a seat, the fluidity of an escape route or the healthiness of a stage’s service room.
The doubts came out in those parts of the building, sometimes small details, where reasonable alteration seemed to prevail over preservation. Time to the uncertainty caused by relationship issues between what we preserved and our contribution. That principally occurred with hall area, very altered by previous refurbishments, the poorly designed proscenium arch (box seats, proscenium, forestage and orchestra pit) and in the accesses to the gods. There was a lack of relation between this floor, occupied by a large and magnificent wood stands made by carpenters of the Compañía Transatlántica, with four hundred people capacity, and the halls. This issue, despite of being a common problem of this type of theatres had to be solved.
