The competition aimed to design a cultural and religious building for Portaceli school. We thought that the new church should preside the front garden of the school, that would act as the place to arrive or evacuate the church. Another condition was the volume needed by the auditorium (7-10 m³/spectator) in order to achieve a good acoustic behaviour. These aspects guided us to a section in which the church was raised over a basement floor (as a podium) that housed the chapel and the meeting rooms. The auditorium would be built in parallel position from the church, based on the lower level and emerging over the site to reach the needed height. The Centro Arrupe, a meeting place for the community, would be on top of the auditorium, hung from the roof trusses. These trusses would set up the skylights that would light up the church, the lobby and the Centro Arrupe itself.
Our proposal expected to be a luminous building, lighted up from the perimeter and the roof. A building that would gather culture and religion, sharing spaces for meeting and learning.
