The plot assigned for the construction of the new Municipal Library and Toy Museum is in the historic center of Torres Vedras. It is an urban void, opened to different streets and defined by heterogeneous party walls with different sizes and heights. Moreover, there are two architectural landmarks that will determine the future project for this cultural center: the presence of Santiago Church and the vision of the Castle and Santa Maria Church through Rua dos Celeiros de Santa Maria. Another requirement of the competition was the reconstruction of one of the facades towards Rua Serpa Pinto.
Our proposal tries to link together the existing buildings, defining a new urban space that will become a cultural reference of the historic center. With this aim in mind, we project three different volumes, each one corresponding to a main use (library, museum and auditorium), that emerge from an atrium floor, a ground floor that put in relation that volumes, defines the accesses from each street and houses the common uses. The functional program is completed with two underground parking floors that will reinforce the attendance of public to this new cultural space.
