The project of this lecture building will complement the new Centro Andalucía TECH Escuela Técnica Superior (CATEPS) of the University of Seville, a building that was originally designed for research and has been recently refurbished to host the Polytechnic school.
Two starting conditions clearly mark the development of the proposal. On the one hand, the selected plot is placed in front of the school, so it would be necessary to build a flyover or an underground walkway to avoid the traffic of calle Américo Vespucio, improving the communication between both buildings. On the other hand, the SE-30 ring road is very close to the plot, so the north facade will need additional protection against traffic noise.
Our proposal consists in a linear-compact building that extends from east to west. It will have four levels and three structural bays, with a narrower central one for circulations and the side bays sized to host the classrooms. The south facade will have big openings in the classrooms and terraces to light central corridors and provide rest areas, and will be equipped with a plane of sun protection louvres. The design of the north facade follows a sawtooth scheme, with vertical windows opened to the east, protecting the classrooms from the noise of traffic. The main access is placed at the west extreme, closer to the school. Over this entrance, a second one at the first floor will connect with the proposed flyover. The north side of the plot will be occupied by a landscaped parking area, with lot of trees to reduce noise from SE-30.
The project aims to a clear organisation, with an easily adaptable classrooms arrangement, with comfortable spaces for both students and teachers and tries to be economical thanks to its compactness and choice of materials. It will have installations to take advantage of renewable energy sources and a choice of materials and construction systems that together with the compactness of the building ensure its good energy performance.
Finally, we have considered the development of construction works in different phases, starting by the lecture building. When it will be finished, it will be built the flyover and, at the end, the parking and urbanization works.
